Short Game Forgiveness: Cleveland CBX 2 Wedge Review

When it comes to buying new golf clubs, so many of us golfers always focus on the driver. Because let’s face it, who doesn’t want it to hit the ball further. Or as Phil Mickelson says on his Instagram, “Who doesn’t love hitting bombs?”

But what’s the point of hitting bombs off the tee if you can’t get it close with your wedges? One of the clubs that most golfers could greatly benefit from replacing their wedges. After a while, the grooves get worn down and it gets much more difficult to spin the golf ball. Plus, most wedges are not built for forgiveness.

If you’re currently thinking about getting some new wedges, so you can throw some darts, let’s talk about the new Cleveland wedges. The Cleveland CBX 2 wedges are the newest model from the iconic club producer and have made some serious updates for 2019.

While Cleveland’s popularity in the game has declined over the past few years, they still make some of the best wedges in the game. Read the full review of the Cleveland CBX 2 wedges and see if you could benefit from the club switch.

Cleveland CBX2 Wedges Review

Are you tired of hitting chunks, flubs or duffs with your wedges? Isn’t it incredibly frustrating to hit an awesome drive only to ruin it by chunking a wedge short of the green? Not only does it make it hard to score but you feel like you wasted a shot (and your buddies usually let you hear about it too).

If this sounds like you, maybe it’s not entirely your fault. Maybe it’s the wedge’s fault for not having much forgiveness. As I’m sure you know, most wedges aren’t very forgiving. But Cleveland wants to change that with the CBX 2 wedges.

The Cleveland CBX 2 wedges have more spin, plenty of versatility and a lot more forgiveness for the everyday golfer. They are cavity back wedges for cavity back golfers!

Features of the Cleveland CBX 2 Wedges

Here are some of the best features of the new CBX 2 wedges.

Hollow Cavity Design

The Cleveland CBX 2 wedges have a larger sweet spot that makes it easy for golfers of all skill levels to hit pure wedges. This happens by adding a lighter hosel, a tapered flange, a wider toe, and their hollow cavity design. The hollow cavity moves the center of gravity and places it right where you hit the ball.

Good shots turn into great shots and not so good shots turn into very playable shots. No more chunking simple wedges and wasting a good drive. With the CBX 2, you get the best of both worlds with their hollow cavity technology.

Tons of Grooves

If you’re worried that a cavity back won’t have the same grooves as other wedges, think again.

The CBX 2, like the previous RTX-4 model, features the same groove technology which is basically grooves on top of grooves on top of grooves. With so many grooves to gain traction on the golf ball, expect a lot of one hop and stop spin.

There are several different types of grooves that are used in the CBX 2. They have extra sharp Tour Zip Grooves that cut through grass and debris for more spin from the rough. They also have the centered Rotex milling which adds friction between the grooves for even more spin.

Plus, the laser milling process increases roughness right up to the limit to make it easy to get your wedges to check up quickly.

Different Grinds for Different Wedges

Titleist Vokey wedges have different grinds for different wedges and it looks like Cleveland is joining in on the strategy. As each wedge has a different purpose, the club changes based on the loft and bounce.

For pitching and gap wedges (between 46-52 degrees), Cleveland offers a V-shaped sole that glides through turf so you don’t get stuck in the ground on full shots. For sand wedges (between 54-56 degrees), Cleveland offers an S-shaped sole that gets you out of the sand and deep rough easily.

And for the lob wedges (between 58-60 degrees), Cleveland has a C-shaped grind that will give you extra versatility greenside. When you want to open the face and hit one high off a tight lie, the C-shaped grind makes it easy to pull the shot off.

True Temper Dynamic Gold Wedge Shaft

True Temper worked closely with Cleveland to create the Dynamic Gold 115 wedge shaft. This shaft is engineered for these cavity backed wedges. They eliminate the awkward transition from lightweight irons to heavy wedges.

The True Temper shafts are 10g-20g lighter than normal blade wedge shafts making a much better experience for higher handicap players. The shaft matches the feel of your cavity back irons for an easy transition from your full set of irons to your wedges.

Alternatives to the Cleveland CBX 2 Wedges

The CBX 2 Wedges are hands-down, the best wedges on the market for beginners and high handicaps (click here to see our roundup of the best wedges). But here are a couple of other wedges that you should take a look at it if you are a better players.

Callaway Mack Daddy MD4 Wedges

Mack Daddy (coined by Phil Mickelson himself) is a new, high-spin groove wedge that was created Roger Cleveland. This wedge offers a wider sole and several different grinds options like the Vokey and CBX 2 wedges.

The Mack Daddy wedges have four holes on the back of the wedge which help improve control and trajectory. These are another great alternative for mid-handicap golfers.

Titleist Vokey Wedges

Titleist continues to make quality golf clubs and some of the best golf balls as well. While the Titleist Vokey wedges are some of the best in the game, they are not nearly as forgiving as the Cleveland CBX 2 wedges.

Similar to the CBX 2 wedges, they do offer different grinds for pitching, gap, sand, and lob wedges. The different grinds will help you hit tough shots a little bit easier as it’s catered to the most frequently used shots for each club.

Summary of the Cleveland CBX2 Wedges

As you can tell from this review, the Cleveland CBX 2 wedges are a cavity back wedge that was created for cavity back golfers. In all my years playing golf, I can honestly say I’ve never seen a more forgiving set of wedges. Cleveland found a way to blend forgiveness and playability in its latest wedge model.

Even though the wedges are incredibly forgiving, they still have tons of technology to set up great scoring opportunities. Like Cleveland’s other wedge model, the RTX-4, there are grooves on grooves so you won’t have to worry about creating spin.

These wedges are built for tons of spin but offer the convenience of forgiveness as well. Plus, with the new True Temper wedge shaft, they make it a smooth transition from irons to wedges.
