A Classic Look: Footjoy Traditions Golf Shoe Review

FootJoy makes some of the most iconic shoes in the golf world.

The company has been under the same brand (Acushnet) that also owns Titleist and Scotty Cameron since the 1980s. FootJoy is a very popular brand on the PGA Tour as most Titleist sponsored players wear FJ shoes.

Needless to say, they’re a powerhouse in golf and worn by all types of players; from professionals to the everyday amateur golfer. But one of their latest designs, the FootJoy Traditions, might be one of the best shoes in all of golf

They combine an old-school look with new technology and modern feel for a truly iconic golf shoe. Keep reading to learn more about this shoe and see how it can help you play better golf.

FootJoy Traditions Golf Shoes Review

After playing golf for 20+ years, it takes a lot for a pair of shoes to impress me. Heck, I’ve been playing so long I remember when titanium drivers were a new thing and metal spikes could be heard the second you pulled into the parking lot. But the FootJoy traditions

So, what makes these shoes such a great choice for any type of golfer?

Let’s review…

Footjoy Traditions Golf Shoes Review

Fashionable Leather Design

Before you ever put your foot in a golf shoe, you have to first love the look of it. Because let’s face it, if you don’t look good, you can’t play good… right?

The Traditions shoe from FootJoy is a classic looking golf shoe that pays homage to the old school style from the 80s and 90s. Needless to say, I was a sucker for these shoes the moment I laid eyes on them.

The full grain leather looks great to the eye but also provides tons of comfort, breathability, and durability. Plus, they look like traditional saddle golf shoes that I grew up wearing and think they’re an overall great looking design.

Nine Color Options

One of the reasons we think these shoes will resonate with so many types of golfers is the huge color selection. Some of the classic colors include:

  • White/white/gray: These ditch the saddle look and have a small amount of gray at the bottom of the shoe but overall a great summer shoe.
  • White/white: These are 100% white and great for playing in warm weather (I’ve seen a ton of PGA Tour players wearing these too).
  • Black/black. Great for winter golf and muddy conditions as there is no white whatsoever in the design.

But that’s not all; if you prefer something less traditional color scheme in your golf shoe, they offer less conventional colors including:

  • Black/black/gray: These match the white, white and gray ones as they don’t have the traditional saddle look.
  • Gray/blue: The majority of the shoe is gray with the saddle and back portion in a light blue.
  • Gray/gray/white: Similar to the black and white style, these are great with gray pants or shorts.
  • Navy/navy green: The all navy look is great year round and seems to be a trend in the golf world.
  • Brown/white: For a long time brown belts and shoes were the norm in the golf world but went away… until now. The traditional brown/white saddle shoe is a phenomenal look.
  • Blue/white: The last option is a blue and white saddle design which pairs with all types of different outfits.

Overall, there is a huge selection of shoes that you don’t get with most of their competitors.

Complete Support

While these shoes look great, they’re extremely comfortable too. I’ve been quite impressed with the support around the entire shoe and specifically in the arch itself.

FootJoy has complete support thanks to the EVA Fit-Bed, which provides all-day comfort underneath the entire shoe. They also have a foam midsole that provides extra comfort on long days but is still super lightweight too.

This FJ shoe is known as the “Laser Street Fit” which has a full round toe design, narrow heel, and standard fit across the middle of the shoe.

Real Spikes

The majority of golf shoes in today’s world do not have a traditional spike system. Most have built in traction systems that are an alternative to old-school spikes. But as I mentioned, I’m from the era of saddle shoes and metal spikes, so going into athletic shoes without spikes has never felt comfortable to me on the course.

Which is why I always opt to buy shoes with real spikes as I like the additional traction that they provide. With these FootJoy shoes you get the Fast Twist 3.0 cleat system. According to the company, “The Fast Twist 3.0 cleat system is the most advanced insert system on the market. The lower profile design offers improved comfort while still securing each cleat with consistent torque for maximum comfort.”

Waterproof Protection

Finally, if you’re a golfer who doesn’t mind going out and playing in less than perfect weather, these shoes will keep your feet dry. Unlike other popular shoes, these are not water-resistant, but waterproof. Meaning, they will keep your feet comfortable and dry even during the harshest winter conditions that Mother Nature sends your way on the golf course.

Aside from being waterproof, FootJoy also offers a one-year waterproof warranty too. So you’re protected for 365 days and can buy with a guarantee to keep your feet dry during those wet, rainy days on the golf course.

Sizes and Width Options

Lastly, they have a huge selection of sizes that range from 7-15 to fit almost any type of player. Additionally, you can select narrow, medium, wide, and extra wide in most of the color options. Paired with all the nine color combinations, you should be able to find the perfect shoe to fit your golf needs.

FAQs About FootJoy Golf Shoes

Do you have more questions about FJ golf shoes to see if they’re the right fit for you? If so, we have answers below.

Are FootJoy traditions waterproof?

Yes, they are waterproof, not water-resistant so you can count on them keeping your feet dry the entire time you’re on the golf course. Paired with a one-year warranty and real spikes, these will help you weather the conditions and persevere in rainy conditions.

Does FootJoy make good golf shoes?

Yes, FootJoy has been around for decades as they have helped golfers stay comfortable and look good while playing golf. They offer a huge selection of shoes but I think these are some of the best in the entire product lineup. Another pair we like are the Pro SL. You can see our Pro SL review here.

Thanks to the great design and huge amount of colors to choose from, they’re great for any type of player.

Do FootJoy golf shoes run large or small?

I’ve had tons of different types of FJ shoes over the years and can say they’re very consistent. If you have a specific pair now, say the FootJoy Originals, you can buy the same size in this model too. Just make sure you double-check the width as there are multiple sizing options.

What type of laces are offered in these shoes?

The laces in the Traditions golf shoe are normal, lace-up and not “BOA lacing system” like some of their other models.

Final Thoughts on the FJ Traditions Golf Shoes

These are some of the best golf shoes not only in the FJ line but the entire golf shoe industry. It’s no wonder that they made our “Best Golf Shoes list“.

FootJoy found a way to combine the old-school, iconic wingtip style golf shoe to the modern world. It’s a great mix of the two and easy to see why they’re such a popular shoe in their massive lineup. Whether you’re young or old, a scratch player or barely breaking 100, you will love these amazing golf shoes.

Combined with the fact that you can buy in a ton of different colors (including unique combinations like blue/white saddle) and real spikes, these are hard to beat. If you prefer having real spikes like the “good old days” but still have plenty of modern day style, these are the pair for you.

Now, the only decision is trying to figure out which color scheme you want. Chances are, you’ll buy another pair once you put your feet in the first pair.
