Callaway Strata Review: A Full Golf Set for Beginners

If you’re new to the game of golf and already enjoying this crazy sport, I’m sure you’ll learn two things quickly – golf is addicting but very expensive. If you’re looking for a sport you don’t have to spend much money and want to be outside, stick to frisbee golf. But it’s worth it!

While the costs of golf can add up quickly, we wanted to provide newly addicted golfers with ways to play the game in a more cost effective manner. One of the more costly parts of the game is buying clubs and constantly upgrading them as you improve. While the USGA allows you to have up to 14 clubs per bag, you don’t need all of them if you’re just getting started.

The easiest way to reduce startup costs is to buy a total set so you can take them out of the box and be set for a while. But not all sets are created equal; some of them are cheap but unforgiving or too heavy for beginner players.

Although one set stands out amongst all of the others, the Callaway Strata complete set. They’re made by a top club manufacturer in the game and give you everything you need to hit the links and start having fun playing golf. This club set was the top choice on our best full golf club sets for men.

Read the full Callaway Strata review below to learn if these budget friendly set of clubs are right for you.

Callaway Golf Men's Strata Complete 12 Piece Package Set (Right Hand, Steel), Blue

Callaway Golf Men’s Strata Review: Complete 12-Piece Package Set

As I mentioned in the intro, you don’t need 14 clubs to play golf, especially if you’re a beginner. This beginner’s set not only provides the necessary clubs, bag, and other accessories so you can keep costs low and get started quickly. Let’s unbox what’s in this set to help you learn more about what’s inside so you can spend less time shopping and more time playing golf.

What’s Included in the Callaway Strata 12 Piece Complete Set

Strata Driver, Fairway Woods, and Hybrid

The driver is one of the most important clubs in the bag (probably only second to your putter) but not all of them are created equally. For a beginner set, this driver is a solid choice at 460cc (the largest size allowed by the USGA), it has a huge sweet spot to help you hit more fairways.

The set also comes with a matching fairway wood (3 wood) that is oversized for more forgiveness as well. It has an aerodynamic head that is optimized to help you get the ball up quickly and at 15.5 degrees of loft, is perfect for beginner players. Both the fairway wood and the driver come in a lightweight, regular flex graphite shaft designed to provide an easy to hit experience.

While it doesn’t have a 5 wood to accompany the 3 wood, it does offer a 5 hybrid (26 degrees of loft) which is much easier to hit than long irons. No headcover is provided for the hybrid in this set but you do get two matching ones for the driver and 3 wood.

Strata Irons and Wedge

The next longest club after the hybrid is the six iron at 28 degrees of loft. The set also has a 7, 8 and 9 irons plus a pitching wedge. The only club it’s really lacking is the sand wedge as it’s hard to hit a lot of shots around the green with a 44 degree pitching wedge.

The irons were made with high flight technology that will deliver distance, forgiveness, and control so you can hit more greens. Plus, all hybrids, irons and wedges come with a regular flex lightweight steel shaft. These are ideal irons for beginners as they have plenty of flex for golfers with slower swing speeds.

Strata Putter and Stand Bag

The final club in the bag is the putter with a precise face milling that was made to help you hit it pure and roll better putts. It is a traditional blade design with a steel shaft and rubber grip which is fine for most players.

And the final piece of equipment is the stand bag that houses all of your clubs. It’s a lightweight durable bag that has tons of pockets and a clean blue, white, and black design. Plus, it has a convenient strap if you’re riding in a golf cart or a carry strap if you prefer to walk with your bag instead.

Upgraded Callaway Strata Set (16-Piece)

While the 12-piece set has everything you need to get started, there is an upgraded, 16-piece set of golf clubs as well. It has all the same clubs as previously mentioned but also includes a 5 wood (18 degrees), 4 hybrid (22 degrees), sand wedge, and two additional head covers.

Callaway Strata Tour 16-Piece Set

Another option that Callaway has unveiled is the “Tour” version of their beginner, 16-piece golf clubs set. While they have a ton of similarities to the ones mentioned above, there are some key differences as well.

First off, the tour version isn’t offered in a 12-piece set and only comes in a 16-piece version. They’re also made more for performance than just distance and forgiveness like the previous model. While you likely won’t carve shots like Bubba Watson does with a blade iron, these clubs are more workable and not solely focused on distance.

They also have a mallet putter with extra lines on the head for increased visual alignment. Finally, they also have a slightly different bag (red instead of blue as the main color) and it also comes with a rain hood as well.

Women’s Strata Plus 16-Piece Set

The Callaway Strata division has several choices for men but also for women as well. This way ladies won’t have to worry about swinging heavy clubs that are designed for men and make the game more challenging.

This set comes with a driver, 3 wood, 4&5 hybrid, 6-9 irons, two wedges, and a putter. All clubs are very lightweight and made with forgiveness in mind.

Plus, they come with a matching purple and golf black bag plus four matching head covers as well.  There is also a “Tour” version available as well.

Alternatives to the Callaway Strata

As you can tell, Callaway Strata has an extensive line of golf clubs but there are tons of alternatives from other top manufacturers as well.

Wilson Men’s Ultra Complete Set

If you’re looking for the cheapest full set of golf clubs, the Wilson Ultra Complete Golf set might be the ones for you. They are a lower price than the Callaway Strata set and come with nine total golf clubs (driver, fairway wood, hybrid, 4 irons, wedge, and putter).

WILSON Golf Men's Ultra Complete Package Set, Right Hand

Feature wise, these clubs are pretty similar as they’re made for beginners and focus on distance plus forgiveness above all else. Looks wise, these clubs aren’t quite as attractive as the Callaway Strata set and only come in a yellow and black setup. But the putter is a little more of an upgrade than the Strata (looks wise) and comes standard in a white-black two-tone color.

The Wilson beginner set is available in both right and left-handed models. Click here to learn more about the Wilson Men’s Ultra Complete set of clubs.

Wilson Golf Profile SGI Men’s Complete Golf Set

The upgraded version of the Ultra set is the Wilson Golf Profile SGI set. Similar to the rest on this list, these come straight out of the box ready to go.

The driver has a large 460cc head that is focused on forgiveness but also looks great as well. The irons are weighted with 431 stainless steel and have a low center of gravity (COG) to help with distance plus accuracy.

One perk about this set is that the bag comes with adjustable shoulder straps which makes it a lot easier to carry a full 18 holes. Plus, it also has an “easy to launch” sand wedge with low weight and a wide sole that makes it great for all types of shots around the green (unlike the 12-piece Callaway Strata golf clubs).

Another huge perk is that the clubs come in a standard and tall version for golfers who are between 6’1” to 6’5”. Plus, they also have three women’s versions (standard, tall, and petite), a senior version, and a teen version as well! Sadly, these sizing features aren’t a part of any of the Callaway Strata set.

Cobra Golf 2020 Men’s Airspeed Complete Set

If budget is the least of your worries and you want a set of clubs that has everything you need without shopping around, these could be the ones for you. First off, these clubs are gorgeous and have a sleek black and royal blue color set throughout the entire bag.

The standard configuration comes with an offset driver, 3W, 5W, 4& 5 hybrid, 6-PW, SW, and putter in a matching cart bag. They golf clubs also come with five head covers to keep these gorgeous clubs looking better longer.

Cobra Golf 2020 F Max Complete Set Black-Blue (Men's, Right Hand, Graphite, Reg Flex, 10.5, 3W,5W,4H,5H,6-PW, SW, Putter, Bag)

Technology wise, you have the option to purchase in graphite or steel in a regular or senior flex. Plus, the driver is offset which helps minimize slicing the golf ball and all woods have an all new carbon crown designed for speed and forgiveness (with a massive sweet spot). The irons have higher launch than a standard set which make them easier to get airborne and hit more greens.

Finally, these set of golf clubs have a pitching and sand wedge for all types of shots around the green. Lastly, the cart bag is a big upgrade from all the others on this list as it’s a 14-way top with 9 zippered compartments, including a huge beverage cooler that’s insulated.

Final Thoughts on the Callaway Strata Clubs

Hopefully you enjoyed this Callaway Strata review to learn if they are right for your golf game. Instead of using some hand me down clubs that are mismatched, buy this beginner set to get started on the right foot.

The sweet spot is huge on the woods, the irons are forgiving and you don’t have to shop around for each golf club. Not to mention, this set of clubs had a ton of positive reviews and it seems as though most golfers are enjoying how convenient it is to buy it all in one place.

My only complaint is that it doesn’t have a sand wedge and the fairway wood has a low loft for beginning players. Luckily, these problems are easily solved by purchasing the 16-piece set for a small cost. This upgraded edition doesn’t cost much more and gives you another fairway wood (besides just a 3 wood), hybrid, and sand wedge for a total golf experience. For a small upgrade, I think it’s worth it if you’re serious about clubs.

Not to mention, the Strata set comes in all types of different models for men, women, and right-handed or left-handed golfers. There is an option for everyone at conveniently low prices!

I love that Callaway has rolled out the Strata brand to help get more people introduced to the game at a cost effective manner. You get your bag, clubs, and headcovers in one box so you can take your set to the course and start playing golf!
