Walk an Easy 18: The Best Sunday Golf Bag

Are you looking for the best Sunday golf bag but are overwhelmed with all the choices out there? One thing about golf is that manufacturers never make it easy to buy anything as there is such a massive selection. Whether you’re buying a new club, accessory or golf gadget, there are so many options to choose from.

A Sunday golf bag is no exception to the rule either. But instead of making you navigate the internet to find the Sunday golf bag for you, we’ve compiled a list of all the most popular options. This way, you can easily compare Sunday bags and buy the one that’s right for your game (and budget).

If you’re reading this, I assume that you know what Sunday golf bags are but you might be thinking, “What is a Sunday golf bag” anyways? No worries, we got you covered.

A normal golf bag can house 14 clubs easily; some come with a stand if you prefer to walk vs. take a cart, while others are cart bags and some are hybrid models that allow for both. But a Sunday golf bag (also known as a pencil bag) is the easiest type of bag to walk the golf course with as it’s very small and lightweight. It only has 1-2 pockets, a small diameter for about your bag of clubs and not much room for additional accessories.

That being said, it does come with a price – since they are so small, you can’t take all 14 clubs with you. You will have to pick and choose the ones that are right for the course and get creative with a smaller set of clubs.

Keep reading to find our best picks so you can start walking and enjoying summer golf.

What to Look for in a Sunday Golf Bag

Before we dive into the best lightweight bag for you, let’s talk about the criteria for evaluating your Sunday golf bag. Unlike the best cart bags or best stand bags, the main goal for these are lightweight yet still functional.

Here are the seven biggest factors to consider when comparing different Sunday golf bags.

Weight

As I mentioned, the number one thing most golfers evaluate Sunday bags on is weight. The last thing you want is a bag that is heavy and feels like you’re lugging it around or is hard on your back. Instead, you want to find a lightweight bag that still holds enough clubs, looks good, and is friendly for your body as well.

Strap

The second thing to consider is the strap itself. Most of these smaller bags only come with one single strap which is a big change if you’re used to walking 18 holes with the two-strap padded options on most 2020 stand bags.

Although, there are a few on this list that do have a second strap, some are much more padded than others. Also, don’t forget handles as well so your bag is easy to pick up off the ground or out of the car.

Stand

The typical, old-school Sunday bags don’t have a stand. This is very different from normal as the stand for a golf bag is big decision with normal bags. But personally, I use one that does have a stand as it’s much more convenient than having to set your clubs down between every single shot.

I think it’s worth the trade off of extra weight but something you should consider as well. Some golf bags on this list have them while others don’t so plan accordingly.

Pockets

I won’t lie, I’m a bit of a hoarder when it comes to my golf bag which made it hard to try out Sunday bags in the first place. My golfing buddies like to joke that I could survive in the wilderness for a week with just my bag. I always have extra golf supplies, a bottle of aspirin, first aid kit, snacks, and a lot more. But you can’t have much more than the bare essentials with a small bag.

If you’re like me, find one that has a few zippered pockets and make sure to downsize accordingly. This will require a bit of sacrifice but will make it easier for you to walk 18 holes as well.

Dividers

If you’re using a cart bag with 14 dividers for each club now, this is going to be a big difference with Sunday bags. Since they are so much smaller than cart or stand bags, the dividers are much different as well.

Old school Sunday bags don’t have any while modern day ones on this list usually have between 2-3. This will help keep your clubs somewhat organized and in the best shape possible.  Needless to say, it’s a far cry from normal cart bags that have 5-14 dividers.

Durability

While the first five are important in making the right buying decision, let’s not forget about the durability of your Sunday choice. Whenever you’re buying a golf bag, this should be a huge factor as you don’t want to buy a bag that will only last you six months.

A few things to consider when thinking about the durability are the material and color of the bag. Lower price bags tend to use lower cost material that will make it more likely to rip.

Also, don’t forget about the color as well. A bag with dark colors is more likely to fade in the summer sun so plan accordingly for your carry golf bag.

Price

We can’t forget the price of each bag! Luckily, these are a fraction of the cost of normal golf bags since they are so much smaller.

FAQs about Sunday Golf Bags

Got more questions about these smaller, lightweight alternatives to a normal bag? No worries, we got answers…

What is the best golf bag to carry?

As you can tell from the list above, there are tons of great options available if you prefer a smaller, Sunday golf bag vs. a normal stand bag. But if you’re looking for a full-size golf bag with a stand, make sure to read our pick for the best golf stand bags here.

Also, a lot of golfers who prefer to walk vs. ride in a cart tend to have both. So if you have an awesome stand bag, grab a Sunday golf bag for more casual rounds. Or if you only have a Sunday golf bag, find a full size to walk more consistently and get additional exercise on the golf course.

Why is it called a Sunday golf bag?

Great question! I had to do a little research myself on this question.

From what I found, it’s called a Sunday golf bag because it originated in a time where Sunday was treated as the Sabbath by most people. This meant that most people couldn’t work on this day of the week.

But since players still wanted to tee it up and play golf, they couldn’t use caddies and were forced to carry their own bag. This meant players wanted a more lightweight bag that was easier to carry since they weren’t used to doing it consistently.

How should I organize my golf stand bag?

This is a good question for a few reasons.

First, you want to organize your bag so that you protect your clubs. As you know, golf clubs are not a cheap investment and you want to do everything in your power to make them stand the test of time.

Organizing them so that your clubs don’t clank around on a cart or when you’re walking is crucial to keep them in tip top shape. I always suggest having woods at the top of your bag with headcovers on all the time. Then, you want to have all the long irons or hybrids grouped together, mid to short irons, and wedges together.

Not only will this help protect each individual club but it’ll make it easy to find everything as well. Finally, it’ll make you look more like a serious golfer. A lot of beginners have clubs all over the place without any sort of organization which makes it easy to spot among better players. To play great golf, act like the pros by keeping your clubs organized and grouped together.

Should you use a Sunday golf bag on a full size course?

While a lot of golfers might only use these on smaller, executive style courses, you can also use them for a traditional round on a bigger course too. The reason I suggest doing this is because you will only have a select number of clubs (between 6-8 clubs).

Since you’ll likely find some distance for a club you don’t have, it’ll force you to get creative which is a good thing. Instead of always pulling a club for a stock distance, you’ll have to learn how to score without certain clubs. Maybe you have to step on a shorter club or learn how to hit a knockdown.

Either way, this will help you stay mentally engaged and also add a few more shots to your arsenal. When you do play with a full set, golf should feel easier as you will likely gain more confidence.

What clubs should I carry in a Sunday Bag?

There is no one size fits all answer here. Every player should play the clubs that are right for your game, no one else’s game!

Some players might want more fairway woods than others. Other players might want more wedges than others. And maybe you’re like Phil Mickelson and carry two drivers somedays. At the end of the day, play your game. Don’t worry about what anyone else is playing.

The one thing I will say is to have a bag that minimizes your gaps at important scoring distances. For example, make sure your wedges are spaced out evenly so you don’t have a 20 yard gap when it comes to shots from 90-110 yards.

Or, if you’re a more advanced player who can reach a lot of par 5’s, make sure you have the 195-230 distances accounted for. That way after you bomb a drive and are staring down a par 5 in two you don’t have to hit some weird knockdown shot. Instead, have a mix of hybrids, long irons or fairway woods so that distance becomes a green light to attack (and maybe card an eagle).

Final Thoughts on Sunday Golf Bags

My hope is by now that you know everything you’ve wanted about the Sunday golf bag market. As you can tell, there are a ton of great choices out there Sunday golf bags for very low prices compared to most stand bags or cart golf bags.

My advice is to pick a Sunday golf bag that you like the look of and the features to start walking more and enjoying golf with friends, family or new people on the course. Remember, Sunday golf bags are not only easier to walk with but they can also help your game as well. By only carrying a fraction of the number of clubs as normal, you will have to get creative to hit certain shots around the course.

You can even make this a fun Sunday game with buddies and only allow a certain amount of clubs or specific clubs as well.
